BECOMING A MEMBER
How do I join the Quilters' Group?
Welcome! If you would like to join the Quilters' Group, please do the following:
Complete the RSAC registration form and the Quilters' Group registration form. Forms are located in the sewing studio and online.
Submit the completed forms and payments to a studio supervisor or in the Rossmoor Sewing Arts Club (RSAC) mailbox in the Gateway Admin Building.
The Quilters' Newcomer Coordinator will send you an email confirmation.
When may I begin accessing and using the sewing studio?
New members are invited to attend a New Member Orientation and Studio Tour before independently using the studio. New members receive an email notification confirming receipt of their forms and payments, important information about membership privileges, and date(s) for the new member orientation.
USE OF THE STUDIO
Can anyone living in Rossmoor use the Sewing Arts Studio?
No. For safety and liability reasons, use of the studio is limited to registered RSAC members with paid dues. Individuals do not have to be Rossmoor residents to join RSAC.
What are the sewing studio usage guidelines?
Below is a list of general guidelines for member's reference. Check the studio bulletin board for a complete list and detail.
SIGN IN - Members are asked to sign in whenever they use the studio even briefly (to show use of the room.) They are also requested to make sure all irons are off if they are the last ones to leave the studio.
FREE ITEMS - Many items are available in an alcove to the left of the front door. These items include thread, lace, zippers, buttons, bias tape, etc. and are free to members.
BORROWING STUDIO ITEMS - All borrowed sewing machine feet must be returned to the supervisor before the supervisor leaves for the day. There are books available on every subject related to fiber arts. There are also patterns for all kinds of projects. Members are free to borrow these items.
ROTARY CUTTERS - Rotary cutters may only be used on a surface with a self-healing mat.
FUSIBLES - To protect the irons and ironing boards from adhesives, muslin or paper or both must be placed under and over the piece being fused.
USING SPRAY PRODUCTS - Spray products must be used outside.
USING MACHINES - Before using the sewing machines, new members must attend an orientation by a supervisor.
NEEDLES AND BOBBINS- Only Schmetz needles and Janome bobbins may be used in both the Janome and Pfaff machines. Needles and bobbins are available for purchase from the supervisors for $1 each.
SINGER PRODUCTS - The studio only uses Janome and Pfaff machines. The use of Singer products is not allowed because they are not compatible
SERGER/OVERLOCK MACHINES - Serger/Overlock machines are kept in a locked cupboard and are available to members only after having been trained and only when a supervisor who is well versed in the use of the machines is present. Lint must be removed and extra cones must be put away. Machines must be turned off and locked after use.
QUILTERS’ CLOSET - The quilters’ closet contains donated fabric which may be used either for personal projects or for donations. If the fabric is for personal use, the charge is $4/yard; if it is for donations, it is free. The closet also has tools such as rotary cutters, scissors, straight pins, etc., which may be used in the studio and returned after use. The quilters’ closet is open during Friday morning meetings, Monday morning donation-focused meetings, and by appointment with Judy Szilagyi.
EATING AND DRINKING - Drinks and food are only allowed at the meeting tables to the left of the front door.
USING SCENTED PRODUCTS - Using perfumes and colognes (or any strongly scented product) is discouraged. These can cause allergic reactions for some people due to chemical content.
CLEAN UP - Members should always make sure their work area is clean and tidy. Loose threads and fabric scraps should be discarded properly.
PHONE CALLS - Phone calls should be made or answered outside.
